Update:
Ian quickly and easily completed the Speech class by giving two great speeches that were actually graded higher than Haley's. That class is essentially complete and he earned an A.
The drawing class is going well. The teacher is pretty laid back, and as long as the kids show up for class and participate fully, they get a good grade.
So Ian had lots of time to do nothing...
He quickly completed the Algebra 2 and Geometry lessons on Teaching Textbooks within an hour, so I added EMF (which extended his work time to maybe 90 minutes a few times a week when he's not in class).
He has a physical geography class that we added that starts on 10/15.
He has an English Comp I class that starts on 11/5.
Then we got a *spark* of inspiration.
So what had happened was...
Haley is applying to law schools. Graduate schools are expensive. And with no more Grandma Holla trust fund for her education, we thought we'd have her try for some federal aid. Why not, right? We were pleasantly surprised when her graduate student status affords her to apply alone, independently. There aren't many things that one can 'easily' borrow money for. And there are even less things that the government will GIVE you money for. Vacations, healthy food, nice things...nope. But education? Yes. Take it for that, and use your own money for the other stuff.
So we helped Haley complete her FAFSA. And after that (surprisingly relatively easy process) we pivoted to Ian. What about him? Does he need one? Afterall, THIS FAFSA is for NEXT year. And there is no Grandma Holla trust fund for him.
So we started thinking about it. Playing it out in our minds. Discussing options and opportunities. For two days with a sense of urgency - do we complete a FAFSA for Ian? we asked ourselves.
This led to pulling up transfer guides, and transfer criteria. Looking at the pre-requisites, and price tags of the three local schools: UT Dallas, UNT Denton, and UT Arlington. The fact that Haley was accepted into all three schools keeps us optimistic about Ian because his grades will be slightly better (because he is not starting as a science major with hard science and math classes that pulled Haley's GPA down initially). He already has 8 college credits from high-school DE for the last two years. And there are more online options which is better because it allows for easier organization (less note-taking, less information lost in transit, etc).
I went back through email to check and see what the strategy was for Haley and am replicating for Ian (below). Funny thing is, just a few weeks ago he was doing online math, Hybrid school science, and taking only 2 CC classes. Now he's taking 15 units (plus doing a Wintermester) and retaking the TSI before the end of the semester to make the transcript look more attractive...
...and applying for entry into UT Dallas this month. We'll save UNT until after he gets 30 units (so likely after Spring 19 semester - May. Deadline isn't until August 1st. We'll do the FAFSA and add both schools, but I don't know how beneficial it is to do the FAFSA "early" as recommended but not hold an acceptance letter from an institution....
